It’s been a long-running joke that the “Your Body Is a Wonderland” singer would be subjected to the so-called Jake Gyllenhaal treatment upon the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), but with suspicions that a new track from the songstress is about their relationship, it seems his time has come sooner than anticipated. Though Swift has never outright confirmed the subjects of the vast majority of her songs, context clues point to Mayer as the inspiration for 2010’s “Dear John,” which details an, at minimum, emotionally abusive relationship with a man much older than Swift, who was 19 in the song and 19 when she dated Mayer. Now, Swifties think that the 19th track (hello!!) on the extended version of Midnights may also be about him. “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” details an age gap relationship at the age of 19, as well, and while both tracks are undoubtedly emotionally gripping and metaphorically chilling, the newer of the two cracks open the toxic time in a way that only comes with time to reflect. Naturally, the updated detailing sent Swifties spiraling into new jokes at Mayer’s expense, especially given the unexpected timing of his figurative name being brought back into the conversation. Others hypothesized that Mayer must have certainly been awakened in the middle of the night by a mysterious Midnights energy. And they imagined what he must look like listening to the new song for the first time. They laughed over the idea that Mayer was lulled into a false sense of security over the lack of a Speak Now rerelease. And, of course, this savagery couldn’t be allowed to slip under the radar. It just goes to show that you really do have to expect the unexpected where Blondie is concerned. More News:
