How Do You Keep Pork From Drying Out On The Grill?
Many people shy away from grilling pork because all they know is the dry, tough pork they grew up eating. There are a few easy ways to ensure moist, succulent, and juicy pork any time you want to fire up that grill!
Watch the internal temperature. Pork cooked to 145 degrees is safe, and much more moist.Marinades help to not only infuse flavor, but help moisture too.Bone-in chops tend to be juicier and less dry than the boneless.Thin-cut chops will dry out much quicker than thicker ones.Sear the pork over direct high heat and then move to indirect heat to cook on a lower temp.In addition to avoiding overcooking the pork, allowing it to rest after it comes off the grill lets the juices redistribute before cutting. Let the pork sit, covered for 3-5 minutes before serving.
What Is The Best Pork To Grill?
Like most meats for grilling, I think this is personal opinion. The number one choice seems to be Pork Tenderloin because it’s so tender and can take on flavor from a marinade so well. Even though it’s lean, with marinating and cooking it at the right temperature for the right amount of time, it comes out juicy and moist. Pork chops and ribs come in a very close second since they tend to have a little more fat and that means flavor! Pork steaks, roasts and even belly can also be grilled to tasty perfection. The most important thing to remember no matter what cut you choose is overcooking is the number one way to ruin a great piece of pork when grilling.
How Long Should Pork Be Grilled
The cooking time for pork when grilling will depend on the cut, size and thickness. Using an internal meat thermometer and checking for a temp of 145 is the best way to ensure pork is both done and still moist. (The only exception is if you’re using a ground pork- then the temperature needs to be 160) The following are average times it will take to grill some yummy pig!
Bone-in chops: 22-35 minutesBoneless chops: 12-22 minutesTenderloin: 20-30 minutesKebabs with 1-inch cubes: 10 minutesRibs: 1.5-2 hours
Should You Marinate Pork Before Grilling
As mentioned above, marinating pork is a terrific way to add pump up the flavor and help retain moisture as well. Letting the pork to sit in a marinade for anywhere from an hour to overnight will help lead to grilled pork success! However, I am a firm believer that you don’t have to marinate if you don’t want to. We enjoy very moist grilled pork chops all summer long by using the searing and then indirect heat method and watching that internal temperature like a hawk. If you are a beginner to grilling pork, a marinade would be very helpful.
